Maxine hails from Friona, Texas. Raised in San Angelo, she had the pleasure of being a Reagan Rocket and a Santa Rita Falcon before attending Edison Jr. High and graduating from Central.
While raising her sons and working as a legal assistant, Maxine picked up lunch-hour classes at Angelo State University and earned an English degree. During that time, she also volunteered at the Ron Jackson Juvenile Correctional Complex in Brownwood, Texas through Ministry of the Third Cross.
While mentoring juvenile felons, she learned about the legal frustrations of this vulnerable population where, many times, teens who were turning eighteen faced hearings that would determine whether they would be released or transferred to adult prison. The teens frequently had no communication from their counsel, which was stressful because the girls wanted to prepare. Maxine regretted not being in a position to help.
Soon after, the William Mitchell and Hamline University law schools merged and began offering a modern, hybrid approach to earning a law degree. During her time at Mitchell Hamline School of Law, Maxine traveled back and forth between San Angelo and St. Paul, Minnesota.
During law school, she became interested in the border crisis and wanted to better understand the situation first-hand. She participated in the law school’s immigration clinic, and under the direction of RAICES of San Antonio, she traveled to the Karnes County Immigration Processing Center to interview detainees who were seeking asylum. She and fellow MHSL student lawyers interviewed and prepared approximately 500 asylum-seekers between Christmas and New Year's Day. After returning home, she represented clients telephonically as needed.
Before earning a law degree, Maxine's work as a legal assistant and law clerk positioned her to help many beloved clients in family law matters. She also assisted in catastrophic personal injury claims against global companies and government entities as well as civil rights (Section 1983) excessive force claims. She has also assisted clients with debt collection, bankruptcy, and other civil and criminal defense matters .
After graduating from Angelo State University, Maxine earned a Juris Doctor degree from Mitchell Hamline School of Law in St. Paul, Minnesota.
